Wtf the nationalists and futurists!? Literally comic book villain ass political parties. Risorgimento Italy is so hard to read. At least same time period China, we can blame the 8 nation alliance for decimating the country. Italians were just doing it to themselves. Incompetence and armchair imperialists. So brutal and sad.. and of course Mussolini next so more sad chapters..

Reading you do it for me by zeebee3! Downloaded it for fun but once I picked it up I can’t put it down! It’s 270k words, WIP, and no plot 😆 but I love it so far. Zeebee3’s writing is so so good. I feel like I haven’t loved a dramione read in forever.

I feel like the sisters relationship could’ve been more fleshed out otherwise the dual time line just feels like two separate stories. The secret society business and the ending felt rushed. Overall an enjoyable read!

Every time I switch to this book on the plane I fall asleep immediately 💀

Probably not the best book to listen to on my trip from hell I’m in such a weird headspace right now

This book is keeping me sane on my trip from hell (thanks United outage). It deserves a fairer shake than me listening to it between throwing hands to get my flight rebooked and trying to sleep on the airport floor tho. Sad that things are getting angsty between r and c but the underlying mystery is so good too. On par with all the colors of the dark! How is Tana French so good at writing brooding male detectives

Finished erised… not my thing… but ended super cute

The previous history I read (it did say it was a concise history) made it seem like garibaldi won Naples and sicily by accident and unified Italy to everyone’s mild pleasant surprise. But this book makes it seem like it was really piedmont (and assholes C and I) annexing its neighbors! I’m endlessly fascinated by historians overturning previous generation’s interpretations and this author sure is opinionated

Or better yet, it’s our wonderful house in HH with the dog and cat hair and endless laundry and dishes inside, and the train noise, Gale traffic, and lead pollution outside? <3

Wow. Venice’s history was incredible. Such an enlightened republic, more enlightened than the us capitol today anyway. Over a thousand years of independence, harmony, and prosperity with 0 government overthrowing or successful invasions. To think it almost could’ve been an independent state today if not for napoleon!

I thought picking a popular smutty read = sure hit but alas no. Such weird characterizations 😵‍💫 I get this fic was written for fun but it has to at least make sense? Unless maybe not? Haha.

This book has taken me an age, but it truly transports me whenever I pick it up. Even (especially?) during a crappy work week. I tell myself if I get one more mean email I’m moving into a crumbling villa in Italy. The whims of the author strikes me in the right mood only sometimes. Still I enjoyed the indulgent musings and seeing her bramasole and Roman streets through her eyes. Sad for the journey to end!

Binged this. So touching and such a compelling cast of characters. Even tho some (most?) are assholes? Really really enjoyed this read.

I like the authors approach of treating the subject not as Italian history, but history of what happened on the Italian peninsula. Definitely the most dense of the 3 Italian history books I checked out, but still very interesting

Chapters 12-13. My dear mother would have thrived as an Italian. Although I supposed she did/does thrive as a Chinese lol. It all sound like a hellish nightmare to me as a rule follower/straight shooter
