Bryan is on page 390 of 480 of The Bright Lands
This isn't Southern Gothic; but Southern Surrealism -- emphasis on 'real' -- with a healthy dash of the supernatural.

Bryan is starting Bloodless (Pendergast, #20)
I'm giving this another go. I've been a fan of this character, these authors, and this series since the start. If I'm missing something... well, I'm going to have another go. Maybe re-read some older books, too.

Taking a break for a note. This is a great book, great story. Some dark-ish issues. But the heart is incredible.

This is more modern Southern Gothic with a dash of Magic Realism. And, I love that! Plug in the mystery and suspense element, and wonderfulness.

Rereading this one. It arrived at a time of inconvenience when I first ordered it, and I didn't believe I gave it proper credit.

I gifted my set to a friend, and reordered them. Bardugo is a genius at character development/world building. As is she adept at genre-bending/fluidity. That may be the real magic at the heart of her writing. Pure fantasy is over-wrought. The twists and surprises in the plot are amazing.

This is a re-read. I'm in love with this author's conveyance of plot and sub-plot. The characters are phenomenal, and the emotional investment is immediate.

It doesn't (or maybe it does) help that I was Nicky Bell at his age -- still pretty much am now. Back to the pages.

Opened the book a few moments ago and can't sit it aside. I'm a fan of the Superhero sub-genre, and this is the most humble and grounded I've had the pleasure. Going back for more.

Finally got to start reading.

The plot reminds me of 'Things Half In Shadow'. I loved that book and wish that Finn would return to it. The key element: talking to the dead was real, and held some hold over the main characters. I suppose that's the content of similar fiction.

Ian's denial of hearing his mother's secretive nickname for him is taking this one back to "grounded in reality"? I can live with that.
