Professional alcoholic (soaking up info in pubs) is a pretty funny profession. Also, the MC seems slightly less perfect in this book. He can be sanctimonious, which is almost a flaw, except I mostly agree with the things he's sanctimonious about.

I'm so glad that the friends Thomas made in book one are back. :-)

This is the first time I've seen (or heard, technically) the word "yclept" anywhere other than Scrabble or another word game. But I did know the definition, because it's one of those words that can make your opponent really angry if you play it without knowing what it means.

Owen's thinking: "Most people would envy his life, not Tom's."

...except for people who have seen Cicero dance...

I'm enjoying listening to this book a lot. Another reading adventure outside of my genre. I realized at about Chapter 11 that I was visualizing both PoV characters as versions of Michael Garibaldi. They are both pretty badass, both male and 35ish, and both pretty cynical. But in other ways they are not too similar to each other or to Garibaldi. I guess I just have a standard idea of "badass in space."

Hart_D (ajibooks) is starting The Android's Dream
I always feel like an intrepid explorer discovering new lands when I venture out of my usual genre, but the things I usually read when I do this are actually very popular books. Anyway, I'm enjoying this a lot. I do like stories about political machinations, like Swordspoint and Casket of Souls. There's even a gay character, which was a nice surprise (especially after a bad throwaway joke about closeted people).

Laughing a lot at Whyborne's and Christine's disguises! Whyborne really is not cut out for this type of thing.

At 36%. I'm enjoying it, although it's not like any of her other work that I've read. The focus seems to be on court intrigue, and I actually love those kinds of books - learning more about the plot and characters as layers of deception are peeled back. So far, Iah is my favorite character, but they're all appealing, because they're almost all pretty complex.

At 34% and it already has me overemotional. KJ Charles really takes on meaty concepts, and I find that she always does them justice. It's actually about a pair of marginalized people without sugarcoating what that meant c. 1900 (and what it still means today, in many ways). Amazing book.

This is even better than A Seditious Affair, which was fantastic. Profound, with so much to think about. I'm at 60%, and I don't want it to end.

I'm listening to this on audiobook and it's excellent. But the main characters are truly suffering, and it's making me cry a lot. Someday I want to read a lesbian romance that's all sunshine and roses.
