Who wears a feakin romper when they are pregnant? I was wearing found-clothing in my first pregnancy, and I would never have worn a romper to shop anywhere! Unbelievable.

The voice is what's pulling readers through this novel. Beyond that, some details are working and some aren't. The husband is still blurry, the death doesn't ring quite right, her traveling . . . . Offers of assistance seem spare for Portland.

"...and the empty box of pizza from yesterday evening." It's a small thing and perhaps in the UK, it's fine the way it is, but I want: : the empty pizza box from yesterday evening." I don't want Tommy patting the man on the back, the man who was described as sitting opposite him at table. If Tommy is standing beside his twin at their grandmother's funeral and friends arrive, the first words should be an introduction.

The first time she talked about "red as dawn," I paused. The second time, I complained aloud to my husband, who agreed that the dawn was not red. Now there are red flames. And, yes, I know we say that, people do say that. It's a cliché, but inaccurate. Coals may be red but flames never are. A trivial error, but then referring to people by hair color, the "blonde" man and "a brunette" which are incorrect and annoying.

If I think of it as YA, that might help.

Can I finish this novel? The concept is so good, but all the characters sound alike and it needed a better line editor . . .

I think I'm liking it better as I go along. I was put off by the stereotyped intro to the family: logical dad, emotional mom, jock brother, and artistic sister. If I had read that bit before ordering the book, I would have passed.

I'm going to say just this now: A cat can't birth a litter at 4:04 am. Birthing doesn't go like that, not even for a cat, not for a litter of kittens. She might have started then, but she'd finish an hour later. Longer. Some time later. Each kitten's birth begun with labor, contractions, expulsion, the mother biting or tearing through the sack and eating it, licking her kitten. I dread stories with talking animals.

I have a genuine personal grudge against high school sports, but the scene of losing their coach still felt wounding.

In every year I offered this as a reading to seniors and college students, not a single student had heard of it. That is an appalling failure of Social Studies teachers k-12. At a time when our population was considerably less than 3 million, 500,000 copies were sold within months of publication. Aside from that, Americans were capable of UNDERSTANDING Paine's detailed logic, reasoning, and common sense.

". . . but how a race of men came into the world so exalted above the rest, and distinguished like some new species, is worth enquiring into, and whether they are the means of happiness or of misery to mankind." Paine is logically examining the power and role of hereditary privilege in governance. He has already defined humanity as born to be equals in defiance of birthright royalty and aristocracy. Bravo!
