And you want heifers, not bull-calves, especially from an old cow's last calving. She needs to be replaced.

And why would they have dogs, and why would they know glass? To feed dogs, they need a purpose—as hunters or guards or both?

"in summer . . . moss glows emerald green . . . " Probably not, not anywhere I have ever known. In summer with heat and dry, moss mostly goes dry and golden brown.

But it's a gorgeous read, even so.

I am trying to believe that Eddie would have carried enough film to shoot pictures for hours—hundreds of photos! Today, using a film camera, this would mean a few rolls with 10 to 36 negatives of 35 or 110mm film in a strip. In those days, each image was several inches, each with a separate plate. He would have to remove and inserts a new negative for each image.

The heavier of the glass beads "worked their way to the bottom" of a box. Yes, I know that how it might seem to work, but the opposite is true. The smaller beads fall between and work their way to the bottom and the largest at the top.

I am completely won over. And the cover is extraordinary in itself and as a representation of the novel.

During a workshop, it became apparent that the presenters assumed Shakespeare used the worn "corn" in reference to American corn on the cob. No, he likely would not have been familiar with what we now call corn, and instead, the term referred to barley or any other grain aside from wheat.

Immediately, there are issues. I'll set aside "corn" and deal with "potatoes." Hamnet likens an odor to that of "potato peelings". It is just possible he has smelled a potato. They had not reached England when he was born, but probably had by the time Hamnet died at age 11. Which does not imply that this child would know the South American tuber well enough to use it as a frame of reference.

Politically, it is finally compelling. Rask, after all, is a robber baron, a man without conscience, devoted only to money and winning. Sound familiar? In this way fabulously wealthy men are all alike. And sometimes (not just now) their wives are decent people who try to serve the needs of society. A wonderful art school vanished soon after a principal benefactor (a woman) died. Her sons failed to continue her gifts.
