The chapter "Poetry and Prejudice" had me thinking for a long time. Murder's always wrong and it would have been easiest for Judith to point out. What she said instead is close to something I used to talk about every year while teaching a particular novel with a gay character. My typical class has been my way of humanizing statistics for many years. There averaged at least two non-cis students in each class. I knew.

I feel on stable ground now; the stories she tells about Oregon, about Flight and Soapstone... precious to me.

Loved this chapter, "Beds."

Wow!

Surreal. I don't even like surreal painting. In fiction it is a constant irritant—not thy fault of this book but of me as its reader. I will try to finish it. Later.

I love the lines from Moonstruck—they are part of our family expressions, and only eating what she'd kill... owl pellets.

My husband was involved in the early effort to preserve the Puget Coast Salish language (early 1970s at the UW and Tulalip), which is why I ordered this book.

So far...

The story was sliced out of something it didn't quite get to. It isn't enough for me to find a story set-up, a "situation" my writing partner and I called it It needs to go someplace.

But, reading "How Many Boys" and the serial failure of appliances made me smile, because that's happened to me and I used it in a story too.

I am not loving these stories, but I have liked a couple so far.

a couple of "slice of life" stories

Irwin wraps up the most recent five centuries or so by saying there may be(or may not) be less to tell about, certainly skilled poetry—so he claims—than that of earlier authors. Rather analogous to skimming over recent work in English, because after all, none of is so wonderful as Shakespeare.

Only in the final ages does Irwin delve into the challenge of translation. Arabic has the largest vocabulary of any language, and thus one-word translation of an Arabic word may not carry all the nuances of the original. How could it?

Much disdain for stories with a moral or those failing to represent morality, to demonstrate a moral according to faith.

Irwin's commentary claims "zirbaj is a Persian sweet-and-sour recipe" but all I can find are stews with meat (430). However, these may be sweet-and-sour stews, but all contain meat.

and war and romance and several mentions of horses, which have been notably absent... prior, more mules than horses

Only 448 pages, and these last 30 pages seem to focus on fictional adventures.

I have read the 1001 nights story of Judar in another translation. I recognize the marriage to parent's brother's daughter kinship from Anthro.

"Patriotic" was excellent.

The first two stories did nothing, but I kind of loved "Chickens." It's rare to read a story that does justice to an animal.
