Oh dear, “a spire of obsidian and glassy metamorphic rock” what would be igneous, not metamorphic. And how old is Klara meant to be? In The Nutcracker she's prepubescent, but this Klara is running a station alone, which suggests she adult or nearly so. Yet she skips across the room, is alternatively childish, adolescent, and teenaged?

She needed nutcracker androids for her plot, but that's not how nuts would be commercially harvested and cracked, not even on a space colony. Just saying.

More's Utopia is less paradise than my nation. There are, for one thing, no legal slaves in every household. Fornication is not punishable by death. And then I read Le Guin's essay, "A Non-Euclidean View of California as a Cold Place to Be," which I have read before, of course I have, but tucked away. My novel is response.

Two things: references to "corn" do not refer to New World maize, but to wheat and barley. & "No country family has fewer than forty men and women in it, besides two slaves"n(74). Yeah, his paradise was sounding well til that. There is a social hierarchy, a "master and mistress" over every family. There is a clear power structure that is chosen by the people. Philarch, Archphilarch, and Prince chosen for life.

Some use "hippy" for "hippie." Wikipedia and every other source I found prefers "hippie" and most go further to insist that "hippy" describes someone w/hips. Since Miéville also writes "le Guin" when he should have capped the L, "Le Guin" (her essays are included in this book), he loses credibility. On the other hand, I loved EmbassyTownThe City and the City so I should probably cut him some slack.

The image is correct, but GR is only counting More's actual text. I am reading Miéville's intro and Le Guin's essays.

It took several tries to get the correct edition showing and this might still be Kindle, while I am actually reading a paper cover. Goodreads does not deal well with translations and editions.
