100/216, slavery and hired mercenaries to fight their wars, division of labor with women taking easier jobs because of their "weakness," gold chamberpot, useless diamond as children's toys, but a 6-hour workday and 36 hour workweek so far as I can tell? Church?

More's Utopia is less paradise than my nation. There are, for one thing, no legal slaves in every household. Fornication is not punishable by death. There is no dishonor in living should my husband, father, or brother die in war. And then I read Le Guin's essay, "A Non-Euclidean View of California as a Cold Place to Be," which I have read before, of course I have, but tucked away. My novel is response.

Two things: references to "corn" do not refer to New World maize, but to wheat and barley. & "No country family has fewer than forty men and women in it, besides two slaves"n(74). Yeah, his paradise was sounding well til that. There is a social hierarchy, a "master and mistress" over every family. There is a clear power structure that is chosen by the people. Philarch, Archphilarch, and Prince chosen for life.
