I'm going to say just this now: A cat can't birth a litter at 4:04 am. Birthing doesn't go like that, not even for a cat, not for a litter of kittens. She might have started then, but she'd finish an hour later. Longer. Some time later. Each kitten's birth begun with labor, contractions, expulsion, the mother biting or tearing through the sack and eating it, licking her kitten. I dread stories with talking animals.

Still not sold—so many interesting things . . .

I have a genuine personal grudge against high school sports, but the scene of losing their coach still felt wounding.
