annoyed... much to appreciate here, but...

There are so many tiny things and not-so tiny things that are not magical, but also not quite... right? As one example: is it possible for a mouse to climb up inside trousers and the wearer not notice? However focused the man was on a task? Not to mention, why would a mouse do that? Asking for a friend.

The canaries singing human-composed songs? Sweet fantasy.

Charming so far... though my bird-loving husband thinks an aviary in a glass house is a bad idea.

It is a procedural, and the voices are intriguing, but I can't sink into it.

Dialogue in dialect is well out of fashion, but I appreciate the voices here.

So far, cute and funny, but it's YA and I wish the author actually knew something more about baking. [I worked in a bakery.]

I can be petty when it comes to tiny errors. This is a long, detailed, and poetic work. And yet I have found only 2 inconsequential errors: coal cars in Oregon trains and squashed fleas.

Since I have watched trains my long life in the Pacific NW, I am allowed to say that we have not mined nor burned coal for fuel here. Ever.

Slapping a flea won't kill it. Again, personal experience.

Otherwise, loving this book!

Nethercott develops a large cast of characters so gracefully that I have managed to keep track of them.

So far, this might be the best fantasy of the past 12 months.
