religious pantheons and rituals become. Some Filipino crucifies himself at Easter because Jesus drove him to it? No, no he's mad from the start and religion gives it an outlet.....they're all raving maniacs to begin with looking for some grand design that they can fit into, some system of absolutes where they can find refuge.....

...but the madness comes first. It's an essential of the human condition, the worse the human condition the greater the madness and your revealed religion simply comes along to channel the madness, give some shape to it. For these unlettered hordes mired in poverty the only things that are free are sex and religion, and the poorer and more illiterate they are the more they procreate and the more ornate these.....

-Eggs? you want me to make eggs?
-You can't make eggs.
-I can so....
-Listen Lily you can't make eggs. Chickens make eggs, ducks make eggs, those swans on the pond out there make eggs but you don't make eggs. You cook eggs, you prepare eggs. You don't make eggs.
-Oh Oscar. You always make everything so complicated...
-Isn't that what language is for? to say what you mean? That's why man invented language....

It was her first encounter with a born reader...she had never before lived in a house with books in it. Gradually she had learned to take pride in Hazeldean's reading...but still, in her heart of hearts she regarded books as a mere expedient...an aid to patience...

"Shan't you be too tired to read tonight?" she questioned wistfully.

"Too tired? Why, you goose, reading is the greatest rest in the world!"

for me the principal interest of the scene lay in the May weather, the ripple of spring dresses over the turf, the sense of youth, fun, gaiety, of young manhood & womanhood weaving their eternal pattern under the conniving sky. Now & then they were interrupted for a moment...then eyes wandered again, chatter began, & youth & sex had it their own way till the next charge shook them from their trance.

Charlotte did not die. She lived to grow robust and middle-aged, energetic and even tyrannical. And as the transformation in her character took place she became more and more like the typical old maid: precise, methodical, absorbed in trifles, and attaching an exaggerated importance to the smallest social and domestic observances.
-----------
Wanna see the movie again after reading this with Bette Davis.

Slowly but surely I'll get through these books. Need to read 4 books each month to meet my yearly goal.
