Tolstoi made the writing of Stephen Crane on the Civil War seem like the brilliant imagining of a sick boy who had never seen war but had only read the battles... .Until I read the Chartreuse de Parme by Stendhal I had never read of war as it was except in Tolstoi...To have come on all this new world of writing, with time to read in a city like Paris....was like having a great treasure given to you.

One day, much later, I met Joyce who was walking along the Boulevard St.-Germain after having been to a matinee alone. He liked to listen to the actors, although he could not see them. He asked me to have a drink with him and we went to the Deux-Magots and ordered dry sherry although you will always read that he drank only Swiss white wine.

"Part of you died each year when the leaves fell from the trees and their branches were bare against the wind and the cold, wintry light. But you knew there would always be the spring, as you knew the river would flow again after it was frozen. When the cold rains kept on and killed the spring, it was as though a young person had died for no reason."

I've been wanting to read Pynchon's Jr. BUT my library don't have it. B&N don't have it. Amazon has it through sellers and they are asking for WAYY too much. Almost $20 including S&H for a USED one. I don't understand why of all the Pynchon books I am having this issue with Jr. So frustrating!

It is with desire and frustration that Meursault begins to be a philosopher: At first he is "hardly conscious of being in prison," but he soon finds himself facing the awful breach between the concrete but vacuous reality of his former existence and the abstract but rich possibilities of thought. At first it is simple daydreaming, "my habit of thinking like a free man," but soon imagination begins to take the...

It is true that the trial is a political mockery, but its purpose is not to demonstrate some perverse injustice or to make a victim out of "innocent" Meursault. It is a trial of Meursault's uneventful life, not for justice, but in and for himself (72).
