A lot of commas in this book........opposite of a Cormac McCarthy book.

The street was dark now. He looked up at the window once more and he saw the strange woman and the man and the child in a group together. The emptiness spread in him. All was gone. Antonapoulos was away; he was not here to remember. The thoughts of his friend were somewhere else.


Reading that part was when I really felt Singer's loneliness.

The worst thing was the wine at the hotel, and Lawrence's denunciation offers the rich taste of his conversation: 'cat-pisss is champagne compared, this is the sulphureous urination of some aged horse.' =D

When love is gone, and desire is dead, and tragedy has left the heart then grief and pain to too, withdrawing from the heart and leaving strange cold stretches of sand... Yet even waste, grey foreshores, and sorry, far-out clay are sea-bed still, through their hour of bare denuding, It is the moon that turns the tides. The beaches can do nothing about it.

A poem like 'Nothing to Save' suggests what it was like for him during the last year of his life, feeling almost overwhelmed by the prospect of death, and yet determinedly and miraculously alive. There is nothing to save, now all is lost, by a tiny core of stillness in the heart like the eye of a violet.

In these years, Lawrence became aware as never before of the split in him between a belief in lonely individuality, modified only by partnership, and a profound nostalgia for the communal. He would never be happy with other people; he knew that. 'I don't see how one can even begin to be honest with other people. And as I hate lying, I keep to myself as much as possible.'

Writing fiction seems to have been his best way of freeing up the logjam of his feelings, of realizing in language what he was experiencing. It may well be true that it was not until he had written it that Lawrence felt he had had an experience; and this would go some way to explaining why he used this recreative method so very often. -pg. 217

Letters were creative work, never simply confessions. They were occasions for trying out a language to express feelings as those feelings were immediately present to him; and very often he experimented with a language that he reckoned appropriate for the person to whom the letter was being written
(pg 170).
