Recalling a quote from Sinatra's lover Ava Gardner, in which she stated the singer was "only 110 pounds, but 10 pounds of it is c**k!", Kaplan insists Sinatra wasn't proud of his manhood.
What?? Not proud, hmmm, that's a first.

The Girl Who Walked Home Alone: A Personal Biography of Bette Davis
Then, she let go of my hand...leaving me all alone before the loving audience... The theater shook with applause. People stood on their chairs, cheering and waving. And it was all for me! Waves of love flooded the stage and washed over me....One is both lover and beloved. I forgot all about Charlie and his silly letter [bf who broke up with her]. I'd found the one true, enduring romance of my life. (pg 59)

She wanted a "summing up" in the manner of Somerset Maugham's The Summing Up. "I read what I could of Maugham before I did Of Human Bondage....I've always liked reading, especially Maugham. Later when I was what you call between jobs, I read everything of Maugham. Everything. She believed that playing Mildred in Maugham's Of Human Bondage was "an absolute turning point" in her career..." (pg. 12)

So, well before I can remember, I became Betty with a y until this neighbor suggested I spell it with an e because she'd been reading Balzac's La Cousine Bette.....It wasn't until some time later that I read the novel and found out Monsieur Balzac's Lisbeth was rather a bitch. Oh, well - too late now. (pg. 34)

WHY doesn't GR let me delete some of these titles on my "Currently Reading" list that I am no longer interested in? Sure, I could click "I'm Finished" but that would be a lie and my weird mind wouldn't be able to get passed it. I feel obligated to read them, which doesn't make me want to. >:I

"I let the man who has awakened me drink the fruit he is pressing...Anxious to arrange my hair and see what my new face looks like, I took up the hand-mirror, [he remains] on the divan and his mute appeal receives the most flattering of responses: my look of a submissive bitch, rather shame-faced, rather cowed, very much petted, and ready to accept the leash, the collar, the place at her master's feet, & everything."

"Oh!...suddenly my mouth, in spite of itself, lets itself be opened, opens itself as irresistibly as a ripe plum splits in the sun. And once again there is born that exacting pain that spreads from my lips, all down my flanks as far as my knees, that swelling as of a wound that wants to open once more and overflow - the voluptuous pleasure that I had forgotten" (Colette 126).

"First of all live, and then philosophize and write. Writers above all should live with an attitude towards the world which effects a greater acquisition of truth. That small something which will reflect this on the page, anything, will be the literature of our time, nothing else." (Calvino 126)

My first book for the BIG book challenge. =) I have the BN version, however, on GR it doesn't match the correct number of pages so I went with this cover. =/

"...the majority of the stories told by the guides about happenings in New Orleans' historic houses were invented by Faulkner; because when he was young, Faulkner lived here for a few years working as a guide taking tourists around the place;...[the stories] were all so successful that all the other guides also started to tell them and now they are part of Louisiana's history." (Calvino 109) - CoOL!
