She was only too ready to knock her head on the ground before a man. But this was only when she was so certain of her man, that she could worship him as a woman worships her own infant, with a worship of perfect possession. It was intolerable, this possession at the hands of woman. Always a man must be considered as the broken off fragment of a woman, and the sex was the still aching scar of the laceration.

But he would rather not live than accept the love she proffered. The old way of love seemed a dreadful bondage, a sort of conscription. What it was in him he did not know, but the thought of love, marriage, and children, and a life lived together, in the horrible privacy of domestic and connubial satisfaction, was repulsive. - Birkin

But what a joy! What a gladness to think that whatever humanity did, it could not seize hold of the kingdom of death, to nullify that. The sea they turned into a murderous alley and a soiled road of commerce, disputed like the dirty land of a city every inch of it. The air they claimed too, shared it up, parcelled it out to certain owners, they trespassed in the air to fight for it.

For where was life to be found? No flowers grow upon busy machinery, there is no sky to a routine, there is no space to a rotary motion. And all life was a rotary motion, mechanised, cut off from reality. There was nothing to look for from life— it was the same in all countries and all peoples. The only window was death.

He stood smiling in frustration and amusement and irritation and admiration and love. She was so quick, and so lambent, like discernible fire, and so vindictive, and so rich in her dangerous flamy sensitiveness.

Nor was contraception a difficulty. The rhythm method was occasionally used at this time, but withdrawal was more common. Aristocratic women of sufficient confidence, as the ever-diligent chronicler Brantome had earlier recorded, took pleasure in "putting it in and frolicking until they are surfeited, but they do not receive any of the seed...for they do not wish to permit anything to be left inside of them."

"Emile [had learned that for extramarital affairs]...With one's husband, formal sex in the missionary position was all that should be offered, but with a lover, the woman could be more inventive. Indeed, one aristocratic young woman had reported that she only engaged in sex in the female-superior position when she was with her lover...[so if her husband asked if she would let another man mount her while he was away,

"Even child rearing wasn't something she could take much pride in, for parents of her class were strongly discouraged from spending much time with their children when very young. There were wet nurses and nannies to handle these "primitive" tasks."

"Men can choose lots of ways to achieve glory," Emile wrote, looking back, "...but woman can not. Yet when someone is born with a soul that wants more, at least solitary study is there to console them." (p. 22)

So I kinda want a reading buddy. Just to email each other weekly (or more) and share our thoughts on our current read. One book that I am sorta currently reading (for some reason I haven't been in a big reading mood) is Women in Love by D.H. Lawrence. We could read that book or just suggest one. Sooo if anyone is interested just send me a message. =]

"Men think women aren't the same as they are, wanting a gorgeous man in the way they want a gorgeous woman. Ha! I saw in Laurence Olivier exactly what men saw in Marilyn Monroe...But if [he] had asked me, I would have said yes! As it was, I had sex with him dozens and dozens of times - in my head, alone in bed or sometimes when another man was making love to me" (pg 142).

"You see, I thought I was fairly attractive until I got to Hollywood, but I didn't go on thinking that for very long. But then they would want to go too far in their efforts to 'glamourize,' according to their conceptions. Hepburn, Margaret Sullavan, and I were the three who really fought it." (pg. 77)
