Enjoying but I had somewhat higher hopes.

Truly serendipitous selection by the book club. It appears to feature prominently the two subjects which have lately been rattling around upstairs: Sculpture and Dante. Hopefully I can keep up.

First read this 10 years ago in an antiquated translation, possibly even prose, with zero annotations, before I knew how to select the matching edition on here, when the only lit that interested me was the DFW-sphere, and rated the thing three stars. Thank god human beings are capable of change.

Not sure I would continue if I weren’t already acquainted with Hardy.

So glad I was convinced to give this another shot. Very excited to have a new bibliography to gorge on.

This is a lot of fun. The Lake Michigan setting might be biasing me a bit but oh well. I’m thinking it would be an interesting project one day to read all of Pynchon’s books in order of their historical setting…

This has really picked up.

To my taste as a reader, if a book aspires to a certain level of impenetrability, it should also simultaneously somehow seduce the reader into attempting to uncover its secrets. Schattenfroh has long sentences, but at least in translation, they lack the style that keeps me invested in works by say, Pynchon or Gass. I’m not the least bit curious about what it all means. I think I’ll be putting this one aside.

Perfect for when I need to come up for air from Schattenfroh.
