Liking this. A kind of dreamlike, fairytale style to it. Could really do with a glossary of all the Indian dialect slang, though - missing loads of nuance, and making me want to learn more about the country. A common theme of Indian novels, that - really must get around to reading up on Indian history/culture a bit more sometime...

Re-reading in the wake of the Brexit vote. More depressing this time...

Not really sure what this is about, bar a satire of postcolonial Africa. Another random purchase due to liking the cover and first paragraph. Off to a good start, though.

Feels very familiar, somehow. Of that mould of mid-late-20th century English semi-literary novels that make a typical small town/village setting feel unsettling, the ordinary feel strange, that revel in the oddity of provincial blandness.

Left this for ages, now getting back into it again. Translation could do with being a little less constrained, but solid. Copious footnotes mostly useful - the same translator's take on Heike Monogotari would have benefitted from a similar approach, while being a much smoother, more engaging translation than this overall.

Really not sure if I can be bothered to carry on with this. Started promisingly, now just a succession of humiliations for the main character for no discernable reason. Oh, everyone in the world is an arsehole? How insightful. Do you really need 800 pages to tell us?
