I've simply flown through the first part of this book, quiet, soft and startlingly real. But I had to pause here to explain the stab of nostalgia that I felt when reading about the soldiers learning cross stitch. My grandmother was a nurse during WW2, and she told stories of physiotherapy with the soldiers where they learned how to embroider the insignia of their own regiment. There is truth, humor and tragedy there.
