Actually, so many of the problems of World War 1 came from the expectation that it would be a short war: They had no prepared for the new weapons, they had no preparation for the supply line demands. Only Germany had heavy field artillery before WW1. And actually, Britain, twenty years before, had rejected the adoption of machine guns. Speed was the whole basis for the Schlieffen Plan.
