It’s so interesting how I’ve been in the exact same situation, but noticing completely different things.

This author spirals into projections when she could just google her questions.

Also, why would she not google a picture of a caterpillar chrysalis? That’d be the first thing I would do.

She did not mention what she based her generalization on. Was it Mike-specific or her dad or a male co-worker or a television show she saw once? I’m curious about where these things come from.

It’s actually a little sad that the author doesn’t feel safe enough to ask her husband what he thinks of the caterpillar and instead chooses to generalize.

“Not to generalize” and then goes on to generalize.

I know she means her kid, but what she’s really grieving is an earlier time with less responsibilities.

I’m with Klein, though: if you’re not careful, parents can definitely burn out.

I think I figured it out: every family I know has both spouses working. I don’t know any stay-at-home-mom or stay-at-home-dad.

Nah. A Hemingway daddy-blog sounds terrible, to be honest. It’d be all fishing trips and quotes. I do like the idea of a daddy-blog, though. Or a Parent-blog? I mean, it’s 2023.

Huh. Funny. I like mom-blogs. That’s where I get all my activity ideas.

It’s funny but I was never bored building blocks with my kid. I’m more bored now when he wants to watch Disney all day, everyday.

I can’t help but think about the vastness in culture between generation X and being a millennial. Just this first chapter, I understand the cultural references that Jessi Klein makes but someone who says women don’t have a hero’s journey story has not read any YA since after the hunger games. Maybe it’s a generational thing.

am I still on chapter one? This may not be a book for my attention span.

Strange exposition to fast forward major events.

So interesting that Violet disparaged the Brontë sisters at the beginning of the book, and now we have a “mad” woman in the attic.

I diverge with the author in believing that the removal of autonomy is not romantic

Ah, yes. The pressing of bodies hidden by courtesy.
