The novel keeps getting better and better, and the author includes unexpected surprises, which are always a joy. I never thought this book would be as good as it is.

The characters become more noble and courageous when the battle is over and the hospital occupies the setting . The primary emphasis is the aftermath of the battle, not the battle itself.

I've put this book off for too long. Foote starts with biographies of Davis and Lincoln, and leads to the first shots at Fort Sumter.

One of the best Civil War novels I've read. The different narrators produce an eloquent inside view to the Battle of Franklin.

Such a different culture. It seems like a fable as this old man Faye writes these stories for his grandson.

The author's use of alternating perspectives of characters before the battle of Franklin makes the situation more dire and depressing since the fates of these men are already determined. Already one knows this novel will be one sad tale. Before the battle begins, there is an absence of hope.

How the cultural climate from 1895 to 1915 prepared Europe and the world ford WWI. Just finished the aristocrats in England faikledd to see that the sun was setting on the British Empire.

It's like a reunion as the first act is about the founders of Jefferson and its growth. Where we get to go home again.

I've just finished Chapter 4, Jack Burden's journey into his family's past which he plans on using for his dissertation, but abandons. Still incredibly good. Does one abandon the past when one cannot comprehend it?

This novel is one of the best. Not one time has the narrative slackened or lost interest. Jack Burden is one of the greatest narrators whose ever told a story.

Never read this before. The characterization, the style, and the first person narrator journalist are pretty good.
