At this point, the story has become one of manipulation, but not one where the characters manipulate other characters, but how they attempt to shape and conform their selves to their unconscious perversions. In a sense, the characters are trying to establish or hold onto their delicate, obsessive psyches.

In a novel filled with weird characters, the most "normal" character is Leonora. The strangest one is Private Williams and his stealthy fixation upon Leonora. A close second is Alison.

McCullers' novel, or novella, opens strong and violently as the cowardly Captain Penderton's displays his hostility against a defenseless kitten, and then squares off against his more powerful and sexually provocative wife and loses pitifully against her as she strips him of whatever masculinity he still has with a simple line, which I won't disclose since it is a spoiler.

Still good, but the pace is slowing.

I've come to the part where the daughter realizes what a bad mistake she made moving her older mother in with her. Whether she can realize that she cannot save or protect her mother from old age is another. Too many paths of good intentions.

The old woman has been removed from her small town and the house where she lived with her departed husband for decades by her caring daughter to a modern Budapest. The daughter believes her aging mother will be happy in an apartment complex with all the modern conveniences of 1960, but the daughter does not understand that her mother feels comfortable living in the past since we are all nostalgic by nature.

Forced from his temporary happiness in a small Texas town since his future caught up with him, Jake lives in a rundown neighborhood in Fort Worth across the street from Oswald.

As we get older, we not only cling to objects that carry no meaning to anyone else, but our memories that only speak to us and to others our age. It is not that time is fleeting, but the world that spins away from us. Very moving novel about a daughter, an elderly mother and her husband who has just passed.

The pace slows down at this point, but it is necessary for Jake to build a relationship and a new life which he might have to sacrifice if he carries out his plan to stop Oswald. He's been vacillating.

Still good. Sometimes when you change the past, you change it for the worse.

Difficult reading. The novel opens with the death of Iza's father and how the mother and daughter (Iza) struggle with his death. These first two chapters are quite moving.

Very interesting. What would you do if you had a chance to go back in time and stop the Kennedy assassination? I'm finding out.

I am now in the second year of the war, one that was to last only 90 days. Typical American political and military foresight.

Inspiring and depressing, the novel is an aggregate of interwoven stories that focus on with several characters who struggle during and after WWII in Poland.

While reading this book, I'm amazed at how little I knew about the war and the internecine battles on both sides. Detail is incredible.

Incredibly good story as March, the main character detective, pursues pre-Greater German Reich criminals. It is truly one of those novels that fascinates.

A murder mystery set in an alternative Berlin in 1964 where Germany did not lose WWII, but it seems they did not win it either. Very interesting is the fact that the murder victim is one of Hitler's right-hand men in 1939.

This last section seems to be about whether the people in Carnton will gain their salvation, for God will not grant it unless the earn it by respecting the fallen. Only fifty pages to go.
