Interesting book on how Mann developed the novel from his exile German colony in Southern California in the 1940's.

Dean Jocelin is one of the most interesting characters I have read. Not not is his will indomitable in his determination to build his 400 foot tower, but his humor in dealing with his naysayers is witty and piercing. Yet, is his tower folly or faith?

Carson has just divorced Reeves, and finds that she cannot write her last name (hysteria?).

Chapter 5

A romantic tale about a man who torments the woman he loves since, I believe, he is so psychologically dependent upon her. His reality seems to rely on possessing her soul. He is quite similar to Othello, but this man requires no Iago to tempt him.

The loneliness of the four people who visit Singer at the same time are silent when the meet. They are entrenched in their solitude.

Such a good biography of one of the "wunderkinds" of American literature. The author provides such insights into McCullers' life. I have finished the chapters on McCullers' childhood, her apprenticeship in New York at the age of seventeen, her early and tough marriage, and the writing of her first novel and its publication at the author's young age of 23, which vaulted her into literary prominence.

Blount capsulizes the novel thus far in the words: "‘Resentment is the most precious flower of poverty. Yeah.’"
