McCullers' novel, or novella, opens strong and violently as the cowardly Captain Penderton's displays his hostility against a defenseless kitten, and then squares off against his more powerful and sexually provocative wife and loses pitifully against her as she strips him of whatever masculinity he still has with a simple line, which I won't disclose since it is a spoiler.

At this point, the story has become one of manipulation, but not one where the characters manipulate other characters, but how they attempt to shape and conform their selves to their unconscious perversions. In a sense, the characters are trying to establish or hold onto their delicate, obsessive psyches.

In a novel filled with weird characters, the most "normal" character is Leonora. The strangest one is Private Williams and his stealthy fixation upon Leonora. A close second is Alison.
