- relocation of nearly every plant or animal from it’s natural habitat

The scientists who discovered the ozone corroding chemicals, winner of a noble prize was quoted to say “the work is going well but it appears to be the end of the world”

Chapter 4 denunks the idea that all 4 prior E.L.E.s were caused by impacts. One was caused by ice age, another by plants releasing too much carbon into the air.

Anthropocene is established as the Human era of geology due to our profound impact

“Basically, if you were a triceratops living in Alberta you had two mins before you would be vaporized.”

The biggest cause of extinction related to the meteor was the fallout afterwords. Because this area was rich in sulfur the debris tossed into the air did an excellent job at blocking out sunlight. Most creatures died however of the progeny of the survivors there doesn’t seem to be any common adapted trait

The other big piece of evidence is there was a creator found near the Gulf of Mexico hundreds of miles wide where core samples show it’s filled with glass. There is also evidence in the area of a tsunami

The glass note was so cool to read about

Quartz typically has a very rigid crystal structure but around the areas of WMD testing they have discovered “shocked” quartz which shows fractures in the crystal structure. This type of quartz is abundent in the fossil record near the end of the cretaceous period. This indicates a massive shock occurred around that time

I googled this quartz and it looks pretty standard to the naked eye

They then tested a few samples known from the cretaceous period and found that this was evidence in the period where Dino fossils were discovered as well.

Up to this point that gao in foccils was deemed as a lack of evidence but now the impact hypothesis rained supreme.

Further confirming this was two other discoveries…..

Warren alverez whose father invented the proton accelerator was researching how the Italian peninsula was formed by tectonic plates when his guide showed him a layer of clay in a gorge that did contain any fossils. While the layer of rock above and below both did. This stuck him as incredibly interesting.
His father Luis and him ran many tests and found that a rock found in meteorites was abundant in the clay

Another idea I had driven by humanity’s obliteration of the auk was is sport hunting more or less ecologically impactful then raising livestock. On one hand it provides a better life for the animals but on the other it encourages the depletion of natural resource

With the advantage of hindsight it’s easy for someone as dumb as me to see the flaws in a lot of these ideas or disregard them as silly but these were brilliant minds working with a lack of information. Tip of the hat to lelwin

The other example was a galapagose turtle which people viewed as travel rations because they too would walk right into the boats.

The great auk was a puffin relative from Iceland. At discovery they were incredibly abundant. People began using them as food and to start fires in the place of wood because they were so oily. They would wander onto boats that sailed by. They were hunted for food feathers and fat to rarity and then extinction. The female of the final pair believed to exist is on display at a museum in LA.

We are introduced to the scientist lelwin who’s theory was that mass extinction events where silly and that the theory was only supported due to lack of information

He was a major influence on Charles Darwin (natural selection). Initially Darwin’s ideas were tinged with this dogma seeing slow changes across the world that seemed to support this idea but he later diverged

Interestingly, he believed that evolution was not real because every creature is so specially designed that it would’ve had to be created with the intention and not evolved by chance

He was the first to identify mass extinctions, and that they would have been cataclysmic events

Chapter two introduces us to covier a French scientist (late 1700s) interested on the bones of creatures. He is shown the bones of a creature found in Ohio similar to the Asian elephant but with molars designed to eat meat. He concluded that this must be an extinct ancestor to the elephant and that extinction is a possibility. God doesn’t make mistakes that big was the prevailing ideology at the time.

Across the globe frogs are being killed by a mutated fungus called BD this is being spread by humans. In Panama, a frog hotel has been set up by researchers to prevent some frogs from going extinct.
However, these frogs and their progeny will never live in the wild again unless they develop immunity to BD

WTF fact #1.
West African clawed frogs when injected with pregnant women urine will lay eggs within hours.

Humanity is on the brink of its 6th mass extinction event. The previous 5 were caused by acts of god however this time it is self wrought.

We start by following the disappearance of the golden frog in Panama. He’s is a little cutie but they are dying by the thousands. Also worth noting they said the poison of one of these frogs could kill 1,000 mice

Raptors….pretty much just running from raptors.

Tim who is like 11 is somehow the best with computers. I get that they set up Grant hating computers early but the 24 year old scientist doesn’t know computers better than an 11 year old!?

Grant does some Jedi shit with eggs and poison

Forgot to mention last time that Malcom is a bit heavy handed with the anti capitalist development for dev… sake message

The raptors are trying to distract Ellie from others on the roof planning an ambush.

Can’t help but notice that the two women characters are far less developed then in the movie. Lex is a massive pain who is really just an annoyance and Ellie is a glorified nurse up to this point. A lot of the heroics have been given to the male characters

Again despite being right next to each other Murdoon doesn’t notice GATK.

The park has been running on auxiliary power this whole time and the gas ran out. Murphy law in full effect now.

The raptors are out of there cage and dealing havoc. The team struggles to get the power back on but are ambushed all over by raptors. The kitchen scene plays out the same as the movie.

Grant gets power on by Arthur dies

Vet and law shoot tranks into the Rex

GATK realized that’s the water moving fast means they are approaching a waterfall but there is nothing they can do about it. They slam an oar into the ground to get a couple final moments tettering on the edge

Behind the waterfall Grant finds a room filled with stuff. Meanwhile the kids are be younger down by the Rex. On the verge of being eaten the trans finally sets in

The Rex keeps poking his head out of the bushes at them untill they pass the diplos that they ducked under the edge of the raft to not get spit on

24 mins past in this version of her life. Was that the same day as she unalived herself? Will each subsequent story take place later in her life?
Or if she spends years deciding whether this is her ideal life before being disappointed is she still 35 in the library?

The first memory chosen is if she had stayed with Dan. They own a charming little pub in the countryside. The people like her, they play trivia on Tuesday’s but under the surface they have money problems and Dan is a dick.

As she jumps through more lives will she get better at faking that she is not from another universe because she was real bad in this one.

Nora enters the midnight library at the stroke of midnight. Time is frozen here. The library is a place between death where the multiverse of a persons decisions can be traveled.
If you love the new life or book you get to stay. If you are disappointed you go back to the library. If you give up searching you fade into death
