This could use more showing than telling. It's interesting to get Vashti's perspective in the first few chapters. So far Xerxes is portrayed with far too much sympathy. The dude, from historical accounts, was a bit unhinged, not a nice guy underneath it all. I think the author has chosen the camp of the latter because she wants it to be a sweet love story. I've cringed a bit at the modern dialogue.

Got through a CHUNK over lunch break and was thinking how sweet and beautiful this story is, had a big ol' happy sigh, and then it occurred to me later, as I pondered possible scenarios in the last 42% of this book, that there may not be the happy ending I was imagining because I realized, with horror, the title could be a hint of how the plot ends. So now I'm sad in trepidation but must finish because I'm invested.

Fun premise: Heroine helping innocents escape revolutionary France's guillotine attempts to escape the villain (early shocking twist as to his identity!) & is accidently swept overboard in a storm & time travels 80 years into the future (NOT the past—another twist) to a remote English coast, where she is rescued by a young lighthouse keeper soon at odds with her as mutual suspicion grows. #audiobook
