Wow... in the intro, bell hooks totally calls out Gloria Steinem as racist, for generalizing one black woman’s story (Michelle Wallace’s Black Macho and the Myth Of the Super Woman) as being meaningful to understanding the lives of all black women. I think this is going to be an interesting and perspective challenging read...

This book has me tearing up again. Everyone at her school is protesting Khalil’s death but Starr is still attending class even though she’s the person who best understands just how wrong it was.

I’ve started noticing that books written in the past ten years or so seem to just casually drop in references to peripheral gay couples and characters, even if they aren’t central characters and it isn’t strictly LGBTQ literature. I wonder how long before that becomes common for non-binary folks too...
