I learnrd that the word "race" is derived from Spanish "raza," which was originally used to refer to the "caste or quality of authentic horses. " Oh, and the Nazis studied some of America's laws when formulating their Nuremberg laws. Ouch.

I have hit the "love poems" section of this book. 🤮

Chapter 2 had an amazing analogy comparing living in America today to owning an old home: you can look away from the cracks but that won't make them go away.

Chapter one begins with a metaphor involving two-thousand-year-old, anthrax-ridden reindeer and the hate crime right here in Olathe, KS. I am buckled in.

This book has given me a better understanding of historical trauma. The author weaves the Tulsa massacre through generations of characters, and it's heartbreaking.

I am literally angry that I am in a meeting all day today and can't finish this book right now.

I love how the author describes characters' hair. I never read a book where hair was so important. Weird...but beautiful.

Something I read today that may be important later is Vivek's interest in the word "beautiful." There's a short chapter just about his love of the word and how much he wants "to be as whole as that word."

Right now, my book has slowed. It was more interesting a couple chapters ago because the protagonist and her friend were searching for the person who bought the winning lottery ticket. But now, the protagonist's brother is sick so the search is on hold.

Nic Stone described this book as being about economic disparity, and of course, she's right! It's interesting how she's taking this idea and threading it throughout the story. I would have loved to read the previous draft of the book, which was A LOT longer. Curious what she cut out...

I found the author's use of inanimate objects as "characters" interesting. I just finished a chapter that was told from the point of view of a crumbled up to-do list, which seems random....but it actually showed me a lot about the character who threw away the to-do list.

This last chapter was about the different kinds of loneliness: intimate, relational, and collective. I had never thought about how each type can affect each other 🤔
