Part ll begins with the narrator, in some ways, beginning his experience as an enslaved person without the protection of his owner/father. It is uuuugly and the writing captures the inhumanity. I am wondering if he will see the Water Dancer soon or if she will reappear at the end.

I am still obsessed with the author's style of this book! And... good news... it is starting to make sense!

This is the second time I've started this book, and I am intrigued by the gorgeous writing. The descriptions are vivid and sensory. What I'm having a hard time with is separating the timelines / what's really happening. The book has some magical realism for lack of a better description, and I'm here for it...but I know I am missing some pieces.

"Resist the instinct to look away; instead, look closer..."

I wish I could say that I am surprised at the sentencing...but I remember the headlines. What did surprise me was how unprepared for the sentence Chanel was. She didn't even know she was addressing the judge in her victim impact statement.

"It's not your fault."

Heart. Breaking.

Wow. I just went back and re-read the opening of this book, in which Elsa is described as lonely and weak. The terrible events of the book have sparked so much growth: she may still be "alone" but she's far from weak.

Book four begins with one of my favorite quotes from 1984: "He who controls the past controls the future. He who controls the present controls the past."

"You didn't mean for any of this to happen, " says Barry, as the world hangs in the balance.

Can't wait to finish this one!

The best thing about this book is the questions it poses!

I love how the author folded the timeline...also how Excel is a key component of so many suspenseful scenes!

This book isn't pulling me in as much as Station Eleven...but it is quite an adventure!

I resisted this book because it looked too "girly." The joke's on me: I love it so far!

This book is a slow, slow burn. But... wow, it really nails a lot about family, love, and addiction.

Already found one idea for next year!
