After a two-week break, I'd almost forgotten how intensely bad this writing sucked. Almost...

Nathan seems to have turned into Drake from Gone, although disappointingly, he's lacking the whip-arm. That would make this book even cooler, whip-arms. Like, everyone should have them. I'm very tired, okay?

I have little else to say. I need to start reading faster.

The plot has been completely stopped for a lengthy infodump. Not great writing.

This is really good, but I just don't think I'm in the mood for it. It's a shame.

I don't think I've ever gotten a sense of, "THE PLOT IS THICKENING" to this extent since I read the libretto to A Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum.

This male gaze thing? Maybe just a liiiiitle over the top. But this is actually really good other than that. The results of the wishes are realistic, and Ephriam is a really great character.

I have no idea why I'm having so much trouble getting through this, because it's really well-written and interesting. Maybe when I have to read something, it's never as fun as when I want to read it.

I hate Misa. My review will likely be a rant about how much I hate Misa. Other than her, however, I recall very much liking this portion of the story, so the review will be mostly positive.

That was really, really excellent writing. Good job, Maya Angelou.

The only way this could be better is if it were a hundred pages longer. Applegrant is doing a great job of making sure things aren't rushed, don't get me wrong, but if things were more fleshed out... this would be heaven.

Oh, wait, the flashbacks are still coming. Shit.

Oh, right, I forgot that Angelou was sexually abused when she was a child. She's doing a really great job of describing it from the child's perspective without letting the trauma from her adulthood seep through.

Is this really a conclusion we're coming towards? This certainly isn't how I expected it to end.

I'm glad the flashbacks are over. They were kind of boring and cliched - not nearly as nostalgic and sad as Peters wanted them to be.

Angelou's parents are pretty interesting. I'm curious to see where this is going.

This isn't too much better than the last one - if anything, it's worse. I don't like the way it skips back and forth between story lines - it's a bit whiplashy. Although the plot itself is pretty interesting.

I wonder how much of this is going to be relevant later. I'm giving Angelou the benefit of the doubt for now, but I'm worried that she'll go off on too many irrelevant tangents.

Here we go. Let's see if this is any better than volume one.

I put my finger on why I'm so weirded out by this book, and it's not really a problem. The way that Alyssa talks about homosexuality is just really straightforward - she doesn't use any euphemisms for what she means, and she doesn't try to be subtle. Which is fine - that's exactly how her character would express herself. Good to get that out of the way.

Hayley is such an idiot. I mean that in a completely positive way, of course. But she is.

That part about not seeing whites as real people... man, that was great. It was really great writing, for one thing, but most writers wouldn't be able to capture their own thought process with that much insight and accuracy. And the way she writes it makes it clear just how much she knows that she was wrong, which is even better.

Yeah, I'm just not the type of person this was meant for. Plenty of people will like it, but I'm not among them.

Why can't I put my finger on what's wrong with this book? It's a little strange.
