Dayum. This is a surprisingly dark series for being MG/young-YA.

"Grand Mage," Kenspeckle said, "do not presume to know a person on the basis of a handful of meetings. This can instil irritation, and an immediate unwillingness to co-operate. Likewise, do not flatter in the hope of shaming that person into co-operation, and do not, under any circumstances, condescend." This is very good advice. :>

I'm torn. It's a compelling read... I flip pages with eagerness, and don't want to put the book down to go to bed. On the other hand, I'm not really happy with some of the directions the story's going in. Is a love triangle really necessary in every freaking YA book that has a romance element to it? And with these people, of all people?

I almost feel like we're treading the same waters from the first book but, overall, I'm still generally enjoying it.

It's kind of reminding me of 'The Crown Conspiracy', but with more pointless detail.

I do so love watching the status bar as it ticks down the remaining pages... I, perhaps, am enjoying the notion that I'm mostly done more than I'm enjoying the book. Pity, that.

I'm liking it so far, and I'm digging where it's going - but I'd kind of like it to get there already. Also, I don't like the chapters from Denis' perspective so much.

"There are no defences here, he thought. Not this close to the babies." Wait - wouldn't it make sense to have more defenses by the babies, considering they'd need more protecting than, say, the adults? Derp.

It's interesting, but not really gripping. The author seems to be trying to hard to include as many literary characters/references as possible.

This has a sort of Thursday Next vibe in a way... mixed with the Cthulhu Holmes stories. Erm... we'll see what happens.
