I'm having a BIG problemo with this whole makeover thing, taking Liz from being herself and wearing dresses and girly clothes to "being cool" by dressing down her entire personality. What?!?!?! No way, no how. Not for any guy. Idc if the girl *does* dress fugly (which I'm sure was an exaggeration of her style choice) there's no way. You've gotta be kidding me!

Wes is why this book is a bestseller. 😍 it's not a bad book really. So far I'd give it 3 stars. I'm not hating it. Found a few typos here and there. But I guess that happens. The thing that bugs me about it and why I'm minus 2 stars is because I KNOW that she's gonna end up with Wes and not Michael. The predictability is killing me. So is the pop culture references

I'm only reading this because of Wes. This is an Uber predictable story and it's been done before. Nothing new.

Liz rolls her eyes too much.

Liz is annoying but Wes is awesome. I'm loving Wes.

Authors, when you tell the reader everything up front, there are no surprises. Write in a way that makes readers ask themselves those invisible questions. In a way that makes them curious.

When you tell us everything there is to know,
It KILLS the tension and makes for a slow boring read.

Right now, this is insufferable.

Umm...not bad. Now that we're past the inciting incident. I'm interested in seeing where things go. I'd like it better though if it wasn't written in past tense third.

So far, *yawn* fest. Has one of the most boring openings of a chapter I've ever read.

This book is already giving me anxiety.

This one is on its way to the DNF pile. Already on chapter 2 and there are tons of horrible clichés circa 2005-2012 YA books.

She meets some guy and he's "super hot" and it's all sexual. And she can't stop thinking about him. Then she goes to her job and ooohhh what a surprise....he's the new guy working there.

Why do authors put old pop culture references in their books?

The Saved by the Bell and Zack Morris thing is really bothering me right now... I'm sure this was that authors childhood/young adult hood but her characters are like Gen Z. 😬 I'm sure they're on Netflix digging whatever new shows are being dropped there. The odd throwback has me messed up

I've been stuck on the same chapter for 3 days now. Ugh.... can't get through it.

There's a few threads in here that I do like. But it's not enough among all the slow pacing and endless repetiveness that's making this book hard to get through.

I adore the secret garden scene a lot.

It's summer and these kids haven't gone SWIMMING yet?!?!?! IN California???? Say what?!?!?

Okayy I have to give the writer props for this one scene where she cleverly worked in a little covid-19 pandemic vibe but for this book's world building. Liking this little Easter egg.

She's discovered she can DO something! And it only took halfway through the book to figure it out 😅

Leta might have powers... like I sorta guessed. And she has met the Lord Under. Sorta. Let's see what happens.

This book is so slooooooooow. And boring. It's killing me that Leta has zero agency.

Whoever did the developmental edits on this book (if it had any ...) and allowed it to stay like this did it a huge disservice.

Arien has all the agency. I feel with a different developmental editor this book could've been incredible. Like if Leta would've went down to Lakesedge herself to find Rowan the monster and ask him to help her hide her brother or something... anything... to give her agency and vulnerability and a story line

I feel like Leta is missing agency. She is the main POV MC but so far she only exists for her brother Arien. I dislike that. I feel like POV MCs should have agency and the stories should be *theirs* so I can't exactly route for her. That's what is wrong here. The emotional connection
