Part V is less engaging than the other sections of the book. But compared to other works, I still managed to find elements which hooked me. There are spoilers ahead. Comparing the shorter work, The Death of Ivan Ilyich, Nicholai's death was equally tragic. Tolstoy captures the horror and pain of death. The other important element I have identified is that this book starts very lighthearted and then becomes dark.

I've made it halfway. My opinion of this work has remained unchanged since I began reading it earlier this month. Simply put, this is one of the best books I've ever read. In moments, I feel sorry for Anna, but then my feelings towards her change to disgust, and then again to pity. What a remarkable feat when authors achieve this gift of manipulating our feelings.

The Blizzard is a surprisingly good book. I've had to pause Karenina to reflect on that large tome, and I asked myself, why not continue with The Blizzard, since I was enjoying reading this cold odyssey of a doctor—wearing a pince-nez and a beard, his love of papirosa cigarettes—journeying to Dolgoye to treat or cure victims of the black death? So I reread the earlier pages plus thirty more this morning...
