I DNF'ed "The Maltese Falcon" three years ago. Someone keeps recommending it to me. I have to admit that the opening chapter is verily descriptive, even though Hammett keeps his sentences short. The structure of each paragraph contains polished sentences, wherein each sentence is shot at the reader like a bullet from a BFR revolver. Very good stuff.

Death, decay, guilt, and the supernatural... Thirty pages in, I am understanding who Pedro Paramo truly is.

Very beautiful prose

A weird book

Last year, I attempted to read Shogun by James Clavell. I can't say I was invested in the book. It felt too difficult. However, I will return to it eventually. This book, "The Samurai", feels like a good introduction to Samurai literature. Unlike Shogun, where you're blasted with terms, Shusako Endo introduces these concepts slowly. I get more out of a book when complexity is broken down into manageable steps.
