Fear Meagher is a good NY cop. He is also a bigoted, misogynistic functioning drunk. Some of the best characters in fiction are those that are the most damaged. Reading about perfect characters would be boring.

I really like a good cop yarn, and these are some of the best I have read in a long time. Set in NY-NY in the early '90s, so it is a little dated, but still a good read. I have read other books by this author and have enjoyed them all.

Many years ago when I crossed from the Navy to the Army in preparation for deployment, I lost one of my favorite crime detective novels. It dealt with a New York police officer, the Russian mob, and an albino assassin. I have been hunting for that book for years. This is not that book but it is still a good read.
