I'm relatively new to first-hand reading of King's work. I have to say (yet again) that he's a fantastic storyteller. All I heard previously about King (from my social niche anyway) encapsulated "horror" with no reference to great storytelling. But so far, this is a fantastic story that does have horror parts. The horror is used to show results of events, but the focus is an amazing story.

I'm with others in that the title is misleading (glad I knew it before listening). It's not how it works, it's a history of science fiction, with landmarks and key figures and how they fit into the creation and promotion of the genre. I'm enjoying it, but so far, it's not very instructive. To be sure, it will help an author anyway, but it's just not the directly instructive type help that some might expect.

Wow. The character development is among the best. I am loving this. (Make no mistake though; there are dark parts.)

Wow, this book is surprising me (maybe because of the social niche in which I was raised). I expected the high tension, but I also expected a lesser story-line, yet reviews were great. So I tried it. Wow, was I ever wrong. The story and character development are among the best I've read. Note: If you want things settled, you may not like how one could interpret the events as paranormal, insanity or hallucinations.

So far, this is very engaging. I didn't expect some of the technical detail which added to the fun. Crichton certainly knows how to make this story believable.

The research is very impressive. The fast pace and engagement is certainly among the best. The characters are not AS developed as some, but the book doesn't lose any steam because of it. Amazing book.

Very interesting (and entertaining too). At first it was just because of the radically unexpected and funny logic. then there came an added aspect that provides intrigue and curiosity in me. I'm interested to learn of how much ethics concepts will be added to the fastenating charecters.

Interesting and detailed geographical info. The story has surprising amounts of backdrop type info. I will see how it goes as I read it small amounts at a time (it is a huge book... > 19,000 locations)

Excellent. I look forward to reading this each day (when I can). Scope is about like I expected. Closure is fantastically interesting to me. Being an old hand at C++, I was not used to closer so this is exciting to learn. It also makes sense that it tends to be a feature of languages that use callbacks (and garbage collection for memory management). It is such an interesting concept. LOVE this!

Seems good so far. Yet, it's a little distracting that the author(s) make a lot of puns about magic. I guess I should have seen that coming. :-)

Sounds good so far. There's a minor distraction that the author repeatedly makes puns about magic. I guess I should have seen that coming. But still... seems good so far.

GREAT INSIGHTS... HERE'S ONE:

"Anyone can do what is natural. Those companies that can do what is not natural, to improve productivity even with reduced volumes, or the companies that have these people with the eyes to find ways to do this, will be the companies that survive through recessions."

I'm getting to concepts that should really help in better understanding our own value stream, especially as I reference a document from a Monroeville team member while reading and pondering our methods and handoffs. The importance of work chunk sizes (in all different forms) and system performance over workstation performance, are both so imortant.
