This is developing as a sort of thriller, and it's all about to break open.

"The deeper the question the shallower the answer--until the deepest questions have no answers at all. Why are things the way they are, Kath? A sigh, arms touching, curled hairs floating across one's face, the wind, the clouds overhead. What more answer than that?"

Great start to what promises to be an excellent family story.

Also, I love this cover.

"My wish as a writer about my own racial experience is to unsettle the kind of position of invisibility that whiteness so often assumes; to become uncomfortable in my own skin, to distrust what I'm told about who I am; or even to distrust what I can see. This discomfort, even a little, reminds me (even a little) not to take all the privilege I get every day from my skin for granted." - Tess Taylor

Intriguing new information has just been revealed about how the U.S. got into this post-apocalyptic state. Curious to see where this is going!

"That was all we heard about: the past, the past, the God-damned past. The explanation for everything that happened was contained in our past. A man could behave like a tyrant to his son, and what was his excuse? History."

Perfectly written descriptions. Of a pregnant teenager's belly: "The buttons of her jeans are unsnapped to make way for its fullness, and also to indicate how it got that way in the first place."

"Quint, more a brother than a cousin, had the Confederate flag tattooed on his left forearm, in case you didn't see the one on his right." The level of detail is what makes the uncomfortable humor in this book.

I keep being impressed by how many different subjects are explored in this story. Certainly the book is on the long side, and there are parts I think could have been tightened a bit, but it remains gripping.

Well, this is certainly ambitious, as it's narrated in an invented futuristic dialect.
