The story I've liked best so far is "Standing Ground," which shows a tense situation from different POVs. The ending seemed too abrupt, though, as in several of the other stories.

This collection is specifically non-scifi stories, though with a range of realism. The last few were pretty much right out of the familiar world, and while decent enough reads, they didn't excite me.

The first story, "Half Past Four", was interesting to read but left me feeling that I didn't entirely get it. In each scene, a set of recurring characters are sort of remixed into different versions of lives and relationships to one another. What it means seems largely left as an exercise to the reader.

"The government, afraid of instigating mass panic, had yet to directly address the growing whispers about the Hollowpox, instead asking the Wundrous Society to continue trying to contain it. But in many ways the lack of official information made it worse. Rumors and inaccuracies spread like wildfire, until nobody knew what to believe." It must have been even more eerie to read this when it came out in 2020!

It's cool the way in each book, we're learning along with Morrigan that there's more to the world of this story.

A lot of the story is about people listening in on other people's conversations, and that's sort of what reading it is like.

"The novel, so-called, was more a chair than a painting, my having designed it not as a work of art, but as a functional device, its appearance a thing to behold, but more a thing to mark, a warning perhaps, a gravestone certainly."

"In bed, they made love. Love doesn't just sit there, like a stone, it has to be made, like bread; remade all the time, made new. When it was made, they lay in each other's arms, holding love, asleep."

I wasn't expecting the novel within the novel to be inserted all at once. I also wasn't expecting that after the return to the main story, a whole new subplot would be introduced. Curious to see how it will all fit together.

I was really looking forward to "Paradises Lost", the novella that ends the collection, and it exceeded even my high expectations. It's just what I wanted in a generation ship story.

I'm liking the story at the heart of this, and I get that everything depends on stuff that happened to each of the characters earlier, but the style is trying my patience at times.

"Solitude" is an affecting, thought-provoking story of a society that shuns most social connection as a response to the disastrous overpopulation of the society that came before.

"I knew I was supposed to say that nobody in these yearbooks looked like me... But I never saw anyone like myself. I could read books and watch TV all day, every day, and never see another girl like me. The trans girls on TV made me feel the worst: they were slender and light-skinned and beautiful, and I always changed the channel when I caught a teen show with one of them."
