A notebook or a computer file is okay, but it’s even better if you write them on pieces of scrap paper or the backs of envelopes or napkins from restaurants. If you spilled soda on one or used a different color pen that day, it will help remind you where you were and what you were thinking when you wrote down the idea. Then put all your ideas in a folder or a box (not someplace where your mom might think they are trash and accidentally throw them out!!) and then when you’re stuck for something to write, dump out all your ideas and mix them up. Look through them in a different order every time. Some of them might seem dumb, but don’t throw them away. You never know when they might suddenly be just the thing you need to have a really, really good idea.(less)

We had just finished a project and were looking for something new to work on. He suggested the following prompt: "What if everyone were on LSD and all thoughts were communal?" That was an unexpected and interesting idea for a writing exercise, and we both dug in. A few hours later, we shared our scenes and were intrigued by what we'd done. That nucleus had to morph and change a lot before it became Counteract, but Chase's first scene ended up in Chapter 3, and mine ended up in Chapter 7. (less)

Who Do You Think You Are?

I got my first good look at the Declaration of Independence at a local McDonald’s. I was nine years old, the US Bicentennial celebration was in full swing, and Colonial America and Revolutionary War themes were popular, well, everywhere.

As I sat in the red plastic booth with my Happy Meal, staring up at the life-sized reproduction on the wall over our table, I saw my name. Well, my last name, anyw Read more of this blog post »

“The OCSD has been chipping away at our freedoms for most of our lives, all in the name of safety. But over-controlling something doesn't necessarily make it safer or better, even though people don't realize it. They believe the OCSD protects them and has their best interests at heart, but most of the OCSD's policies do more harm than good.”

“I don’t know what’s worse: to not know what you are and be happy, or to become what you’ve always wanted to be, and feel alone.”

“I see now that the path I choose through the maze makes me what I am. I am not only a thing, but also a way of being—one of many ways—and knowing the paths I have followed and the ones left to take will help me understand what I am becoming.”
Daniel Keyes, Flowers for Algernon

“If humans aren’t smart enough to run their own lives, why should we believe that there are humans smart enough to run the lives of others?”
Steven Horwitz
