I started writing fanfiction as mrstrentreznor.
I thought it was a wonderful concept to take existing characters and flesh them out a little more. Or to write the scenes that didn’t get filmed or written in the original work. I have given away more than a million words on fanfic; but I discovered that I had a million more in my head. And they were my words, my characters and my stories.
Some people have put it on GR under mrstrentreznor
mrstrentreznor.
I do not do pull to publish fanfic.
I am Australian so that explains the weird spelling - note: I would say correct spelling.

One may happen faster than the other. And there are a few significant ‘key’ moments that they can see: a head, a baby, a dragon, and a prehistoric hyena. Nice wedding pressie, eh?
At least they are being a tiny bit more helpful than they have in the past. They live in Atlanta after all.
Kate is freaking out about Julie talking to Roland but she refuses to stop her.
They ask Roman the black volhv, Chernobog’s priest, to officiate the ceremony. He takes on the job of wedding planner as well - no one else was doing it. And then gets into trouble when he invites Roland, Kate’s father. Roland complains about having to let them know if he wants the vegetarian option.
Meanwhile Roland is building a huge fortress - he says it’s a ‘residence’ - right on her borders. And the land IS her’s; he knows it and she’s coming to understand what that means. And there isn’t anyone she can ask for advice, or is there?

How do they do this? How do they keep track of all the characters and plot threads and keep braiding them into such great stories?
Back in my review of book 7, I said And here we come to the essence of Kate; she’s not just kickass, she’s the bad guy. It is literally in her blood. BUT she’s the bad guy who made a choice to be good.
And that choice is getting harder and harder everyday. Sometimes she almost crosses the line.

I hadn’t crossed the line. I’d ridden an elephant up to it and run back and forth along its edge while a mariachi band played in the background, but I hadn’t crossed it.

Andrea and Raphael have a baby! Squees.
Julie has appointed herself as Kate’s Herald. With a flag and everything.

“She’s your Herald,” Derek said. “That’s your color. Blue for humanity.”
My what?
He made a big show of moving a few feet to the side.
I looked at him.
“In case your head explodes,” he said helpfully.

But Kate’s humanity makes her stronger. Each time she takes the more difficult path, adopts a wounded/dangerous/half dead/wholly dead creature it turns out to be a good idea. Love wins.
But where was Grendel?

The Ives were arms makers and friends of Kate and Curran who are out of town for the weekend. The kids were seven and ten and Derek really doesn’t like people who hurt kids.
They didn’t find what they were looking for (the idiots killed them before they asked) so he goes back to the house and catches three shifters searching it. They’re new and don’t recognise him.
Then, Julie shows up on her pony. She negotiated to get a new horse in the last book. Serves her right for taking Hugh’s ridiculous war stallion.

Julie sighed again and glanced at him. “This is taking way too long. That was a declaration of murderous intent. We’re clear. The big one is yours; I’ll take the ginger.”
They moved at the same time. He was a shapeshifter and she was human, so he won the race. But, he reflected, sprinting toward the cat as one of her tomahawks hurtled through the air and sliced into the jackal’s chest, the gap between their reaction time was getting uncomfortably short, and not because he was slowing down. Now that’s interesting… methinks Julie is becoming less human every day.
She is a sensate who can ‘see’ magic, and she can see what the thieves were after, the parts of a metal ball that emit a blue white light. She has a tiny piece of it already. Someone jumped Luther, the biohazard wizard we met last book. He was wearing a hoodie that read ‘wizard at large’ and called Kate ‘unclean’. Kate sells all her weird magic items to his department. Because he was buying this rock ‘off the books’ he hired Kate to investigate and Julie took the job.
The two set off on a hunt that leads them through swamps, to be attacked by mermaids and finally to a battle with the warlock they wanted.

This is the first time we have got a look inside Derek’s head and it aint pretty. Just like Derek. He is more than aware that he is 20 and Julie 16, but he’ll wait for her. And she has always adored him, from the time she first met him.
Grey Wolf #1 huh? I can only assume that means that there will be a Grey Wolf #2 and so on… And I am totally down with this plan.
I find it interesting that the shifters said Derek smelled like a loup. When shifters go loup, the only solution is to put them down. He’s suffered through some super bad stuff and for the first time, we get to see how much damage it did to him. It’s not just the loss of his pretty face.

His father had turned loup. He’d watched him torture and rape his mother and his sisters until he [Derek] finally murdered the thing his father had become. The house had caught on fire. He’d been meant to die in that fire, but he’d survived. (Kindle Locations 530-531).

That’s why he is so loyal to Curran; he made the decision to save the boy even though he already gave off the loup taint. But there is no place for him in the pack, and he knows it. No wolf female will touch him, either. He flirts with the idea that Curran should have had him killed.

The kids are growing up, but I think they’ll be all right. Especially if they are together.
