Book cover for Debt: The First 5,000 Years
Actually, the remarkable thing about the statement “one has to pay one’s debts” is that even according to standard economic theory, it isn’t true. A lender is supposed to accept a certain degree of risk.

The enormous interest rate on credit card debt is to cover default risk, because it's unsecured debt. So discharging it in bankruptcy should be pretty much pro forma.

David Frayne
“When significant proportions of our time are spent working, recuperating from work, compensating for work, or doing the many things necessary in order to find, prepare for, and hold on to work, it becomes increasingly difficult to say how much of our time is truly our own. [ch.three]”
David Frayne, The Refusal of Work: The Theory and Practice of Resistance to Work

Bob Black
“Work makes a mockery of freedom. The official line is that we all have rights and live in a democracy. Other unfortunates who aren't free like we are have to live in police states. These victims obey orders or-else, no matter how arbitrary. The authorities keep them under regular surveillance. State bureaucrats control even the smaller details of everyday life. The officials who push them around are answerable only to higher-ups, public or private. Either way, dissent and disobedience are punished. Informers report regularly to the authorities. All this is supposed to be a very bad thing. And so it is, although it is nothing but a description of the modern workplace.”
Bob Black, The Abolition of Work

Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
“Just because you can read, write and do a little math, doesn't mean that you're entitled to conquer the universe.”
Kurt Vonnegut, Hocus Pocus

David Graeber
“The ultimate, hidden truth of the world is that it is something that we make, and could just as easily make differently.”
David Graeber, The Utopia of Rules: On Technology, Stupidity, and the Secret Joys of Bureaucracy

Woody Allen
“You can live to be a hundred if you give up all the things that make you want to live to be a hundred.”
Woody Allen
