Night falls on the Berlin of the Roaring Twenties by Various
"My initial desire to read this comes out of a snail-mail roleplaying game project that I am currently undertaking (using the De Profundis RPG rules, among others). The idea is to immerse myself into the Berlin of 1933, triangulating this book with..." Read more of this review »

This started well. An environmental disaster and countries drowning in debt. It was quite humorous but then it went nowhere. There was really nothing that developed in a more interesting way past the first couple chapters.

This one was based on an episode arc which was a bit strange as the other stories had been original episodes. But it did help my reading comprehension having already seen the English version of the story a few times. I enjoyed it but would prefer the ...more

This was really disappointing. I loved Jessie's occult investigation book and rushed out to get a copy of this. It started quite interestingly. But the plot just meandered to the point of being non-existent and it all seemed totally random and incons ...more

Vita Sackville-West
“I am reduced to a thing that wants Virginia. I composed a beautiful letter to you in the sleepless nightmare hours of the night, and it has all gone: I just miss you, in a quite simple desperate human way. You, with all your un-dumb letters, would never write so elementary a phrase as that; perhaps you wouldn’t even feel it. And yet I believe you’ll be sensible of a little gap. But you’d clothe it in so exquisite a phrase that it would lose a little of its reality. Whereas with me it is quite stark: I miss you even more than I could have believed; and I was prepared to miss you a good deal. So this letter is just really a squeal of pain. It is incredible how essential to me you have become. I suppose you are accustomed to people saying these things. Damn you, spoilt creature; I shan’t make you love me any the more by giving myself away like this —But oh my dear, I can’t be clever and stand-offish with you: I love you too much for that. Too truly. You have no idea how stand-offish I can be with people I don’t love. I have brought it to a fine art. But you have broken down my defences. And I don’t really resent it.”
Vita Sackville-West, The Letters of Vita Sackville-West and Virginia Woolf

Neal Cassady
“Sometimes I sits and thinks. Other times I sits and drinks, but mostly I just sits.”
Neal Cassady, First Third & Other Writings - Revised & Expanded Edition Together With A New Prologue

Da Xia
“Nothing in this world, is completely new. That's why we study history and compare today, with the past. In the end, every human being, has the same way of thinking.”
Da Xia, 長歌行 3 [Chang Ge Xing 3]

Rainer Maria Rilke
“How should we be able to forget those ancient myths that are at the beginning of all peoples, the myths about dragons that at the last moment turn into princesses; perhaps all the dragons of our lives are princesses who are only waiting to see us once beautiful and brave. Perhaps everything terrible is in its deepest being something helpless that wants help from us.

So you must not be frightened if a sadness rises up before you larger than any you have ever seen; if a restiveness, like light and cloudshadows, passes over your hands and over all you do. You must think that something is happening with you, that life has not forgotten you, that it holds you in its hand; it will not let you fall. Why do you want to shut out of your life any uneasiness, any miseries, or any depressions? For after all, you do not know what work these conditions are doing inside you.”
Rainer Maria Rilke, Letters to a Young Poet
