Scott Schuman
“Cult. My Dad always used to say he didn't care at all about fashion. But he (and everyone I know) care deeply about style and what it says about who you are and the group you want to fit in with. Everyone from the Cowboy to Joe sixpack, the retiree to grumpy teen, dress in a way that clearly communicates to others their chosen group that they want to belong. My Dad would say, "I'm retired, I can wear whatever I want' but I never saw him wear a suit to play golf or an AC/DC concert T-shirt to the links. 'Style' as a concept has been hijacked to mean elite, refined and expensive when it should be thought of as a basic expression of life in much the same way as we all identify with music or speech. At the end of the day style is communication.”
Scott Schuman, Closer

Kim Stanley Robinson
“So who else did you convince?"

"Well, I got Joe to potty train himself, and then I convinced Anna to leave the kids at home and go with me on a vacation to Jamaica."

Roy laughed heartily. "Dreams are so funny."

"Yeah, but bold. So bold. Sometimes I wake up and wonder why I'm not as bold as that all the time. I mean, what have we got to lose?”
Kim Stanley Robinson

Michael Marshall Smith
“When you let it get personal, the cost becomes personal too. You’re opening your own heart here. You sure you want to do that?”
Michael Marshall Smith, Stories: All-New Tales

Kim Stanley Robinson
“Sax had always been so uninterested in [power and gain] that it was hard for him to understand why anyone else would be. What was personal gain but the freedom to do what you wanted to do? And what was power but the freedom to do what you wanted to do? And once you had that freedom, any more wealth or power actually began to restrict one's options, and reduce one's freedom. One became a servant of one's wealth or power, constrained to spend all one's time protecting it.”
Kim Stanley Robinson, Green Mars

Stephen King
“Pain rises. From the heart to the head pain rises.”
Stephen King, Song of Susannah
