"ARGH! A love-hate relationship with this book! Definitely leaning towards the 5 star rating for me, but I want to list some of the issues I have here, before I forget them. 1. Jean is not pronounced Jen (audiobook). 2. Too anti-french/anti-Christian/anti-God etc. (excessive mocking) 3. Fast start, slow pacing afterwards (3 POVs). 4. Immortal protagonist lusting over 19 year olds. All the praise will be in the review." — Apr 14, 2026 05:18AM

"Torturing and SA-ing a character, who is barely an adult... I did NOT expect that... I will try to finish the book, but ... I am not fine with this... There should be trigger warnings." — Apr 09, 2026 11:13AM

"OH MY GOD! Why is the audiobook narrator so good! It's like I am at the theatre! Pure perfection! The plot, characters, prose, I love everything! I am not even halfway through, and I already want to buy the hard cover edition! Brilliant audiobook! The voice acting is another proof that AI will never surpass pure human talent!" — Feb 11, 2026 01:16PM

“Get your own fashion adviser,” Barrons growled. “Maybe I decided I like your style.” “Maybe you thought if you were more like me, she’d fuck you, too.”

“It's easy to mistake being innocent for being simpleminded or naive. We all want to seem sophisticated; we all want to seem street-smart. To be innocent is to be "out of it."
Yet there is a deep truth in innocence. A baby looks in his mother's eyes, and all he sees is love. As innocence fades away, more complicated things take its place. We think we need to outwit others and scheme to get what we want. We begin to spend a lot of energy protecting ourselves. Then life turns into a struggle. People have no choice but to be street-smart. How else can they survive?
When you get right down to it, survival means seeing things the way they really are and responding. It means being open. And that's what innocence is. It's simple and trusting like a child, not judgmental and committed to one narrow point of view. If you are locked into a pattern of thinking and responding, your creativity gets blocked. You miss the freshness and magic of the moment. Learn to be innocent again, and that freshness never fades.”

“Fortunately, the uncertain parentage of an orphan is a crucial emotional scar that must be opened and used to undermine them. When he is standing before you in the final confrontation, if you happen to be his father, this is the time to reveal the fact. Even if you are not, it is worth suggesting you are anyway. It will mess with his head. It could be start of a beautiful relationship; one that should end in his unfortunate demise.”
