His previous novel, "Bootleg Stardust" was published in April 2021 (Simon & Schuster). I'd had the impression that what I was going to hear would be a little corny, a little over the top (as indeed some of the flamenco performances for tourists can be). This one was the real thing, passionate and masterful. I was blown away. I don't think I have any bad experiences with music - maybe just how hard it actually was to, say, get some of the rhythms (and more so the proper sounds) when I was learning African drumming in Ghana. Why does music get stuck in our heads?

If a song gets stuck in your head, how can you get it out?

First, remain calm. That Abba song can’t last all day. Can it?

Diagnosis:

If an undesirable song seems to persist in your mind, you have what’s called an Ohrwurm. That’s German for “ear worm.” These worms can be insidious and frightening. Do not panic.

One of the most important properties of music is that we can listen to it over and over. Tha Read more of this blog post »

“We tourists, I later found out, were invited on purpose. Like all good tourists everywhere, we wore an assortment of badly fitting colourful hats and an unflattering rainbow of shorts. What we didn’t wear was black, especially in the tropical heat. So the first people the spirits saw were us. No doubt that scared them immensely.”

Glenn Dixon, The Infinite Sadness of Small Appliances

“Languages can be powerful things. The stronger ones quite simply bulldoze the weaker ones, assimilating whatever is useful and discarding the rest. It doesn’t take long. Even the speakers of the weaker language, or their children, anyway, soon start conversing in the more powerful tongue.”
Glenn Dixon, Pilgrim in the Palace of Words: A Journey Through the 6,000 Languages of Earth
