Other liminal spaces are doorways (between inside and outside), the beach (between land and sea), twilight and dawn (between day and night) midnight (between two days)...These liminal spaces are widely considered to be extremely potent magical spaces. They act as doorways between our world and the next, where spirits may come through and interact with us to create powerful magic. We as Mexican Americans who are caught between our ancestral history as Mexicans and our personal future as Americans ARE a liminal space. Therefore, we are potent magical beings. Most of us are naturally psychic or otherwise 'in tune', and it's not uncommon for us as liminal people to experience paranormal or supernatural phenomena more frequently than other folks." XVII
Very rarely have I felt seen and understood by an author. As a queer Mexican American practitioner of magic myself, I can relate to J Cross's experience of feeling isolated and not feeling like you belong to either side of your heritage.

"There are three simple guidelines for avoiding cultural insensitivity while engaging in this work:
1. First, this work should not make you money or at least not in any meaningful way.
2. Second, you shouldn't take up space in Mexican communities.
3. Third, your actions shouldn't erase culture." XXIV-XXVI

"Please keep this in mind if you are from outside of the community or are otherwise privileged with plenty of options both in spirit and in life. Is it necessary for you to work with Santa Muerte? Is the help you are seeking available to you in the form of any of the hundreds of saints or spirits willing to hear your call instead? Are you marginalized to the point that no one but death itself will accept you? These are things to consider before you decide to engage in this work." Pg. 120

"Also remember that Santa Muerte can be dangerous... So, unless a person has a serious reason for needing to, it's best to work with the infinite number of other spirits available to them. This helps not only limit the potential danger associated with La Muerte, but also protect our culture." Pg. 120 ...more "
