“As a young scholar and the first black man to receive a Ph.D. from Harvard, W.E.B. Du Bois posed the question as to what would happen if all white people were to lose their racial prejudices overnight. He said that it would make little difference in the economic situation of most blacks. Although "some few would be promoted, some few would get new places" as a result of an end of racial discrimination, nevertheless "the mass would remain as they are" until the younger generations began to "try harder" and the race "lost the omnipresent excuse for failure: prejudice."

“Before we can say who has failed, or who has succeeded, in some endeavor, we must first know who was trying to succeed in that endeavor in the first place.
