The themes are organized by category, and each theme includes suggestions for quotes, poems, and music; possible poses to include; phrases to incorporate the theme at the beginning, middle, and end of class; and other helpful details.

Sounds perfect, right? Unfortunately, there are a number of things that detract from the helpfulness of this book that I'll detail below.

- The themes are comprised in pages 44-177 of the book. So there are 129 pages that directly discuss themes in this book of over 200 pages - just over 50%.
- Outside of the actual theme content, there are several chapters that talk about use of words, what to say, how to be authentic, the importance of practice, and where to find inspiration. This information is helpful but over-written - it could have been one short chapter. And it's mainly applicable to brand new yoga teachers.
- At the end of the book, there are 53 pages of blank "templates" for you to write in your own theme - this is over 20% of the book! The templates are all the same, so they could have included just one or gave the link to download. Having them in the book is not workable because the book is bound, so it won't lie flat for using in class. (Plus, if you are like me, you abhor writing in your books.)
- The themes themselves are useful but not original. I have been teaching yoga for 10 years, and there were very few themes here that I haven't already used. Incorporating the seasons, the yamas/niyamas - these are pretty obvious themes, although it was helpful to get some fresh perspectives.
- The suggestions for poses (and really, for music as well) seems to be more appropriate to vinyasa or flow classes, less applicable to slower hatha or yin yoga classes.
- I do love the inclusion of song and poem references. Unfortunately, the authors don't note which is which! So, for every artist/author with which I wasn't familiar, I had to first Google to figure out whether it was a song or a poem.

Don't get me wrong - I WILL use this book. But whereas I previously thought I would run out and purchase the second volume after getting this one, now I am more reluctant. This book definitely has some helpful information, but it fails to go much beyond what can easily be found online. ...more "
