I write about strong, gutsy women who make mistakes and have lots of baggage. As the saying goes, and I’ve expanded upon, “Well-behaved women seldom make history—or good novels.”

A lifelong writer and reader, I read everything from Daphne du Maurier to the latest Scandinavian crime writers. My English war bride mom and my artistic army officer dad raised me and my two siblings in ultra conservative New Hampshire during the 1950-60s. Growing up in puritanical New England, I was drawn to the gothic, to secrets, mystery, and the dark side of human nature. As my English mum once said, “You’re a good girl who wants to be bad.” Now I have the perfect conduit for my “bad girl” side—writing noir.

All those years, she thought Bert and Nora were her parents. What was so frustrating for her, and now me, is the fact that Nora worked "in service" around Buckingham Palace and someone in the household obviously took her advantage of her. What's even more curious is how much my mum looks like the Queen and has a sense of entitlement that doesn't fit her class. Imagine a 15-year-old (my mum) demanding her mother provide elocution lessons so she could have an upper crust accent? I'd love to do a mystery story around that someday! I think a famous writer once answered that with "Making shit up!"
I love to chase an idea and follow my characters. The whole process fits my needs and passions--love of stories, immersion into another world, being up in my head, research (love this!), pretending I'm a psychologist, working anytime and anywhere, and entertaining readers. Oh, and I can work in my pjs. :)(less)

“Always support younger writers, and do all you can to nourish that spirit of creativity, and original risk. The unique manner of literary innovation that younger writers may engage in, ultimately is priceless. Writers, poets and authors are the spokespersons for ours and the next generations. Support them, mentor them, protect them from the viciousness of popular opinion, which is generally nothing more than censorship wearing the cloak of righteous indignation.”

“Don't be like the herd. Think for yourself. When you see yourself falling into the idiocy of Group Think, do the smart thing and remove yourself. You'll be glad you did.”

“Compassion, generosity, caring; these things are more important than you realize, particularly as we age and get older. And remember, what you give out, you get back three fold. Yes, you can speak out against injustice, you can speak out against inequity, but make sure what you're speaking out against actually warrants your attention. Don't jump on the bandwagon of personal rancor and attack. We are all imperfect human beings. We all deserve second changes and the ability to change, grow, and evolve. This is the nature of nature, and always will be.”
