All of my books have an element of mystery and magic, even the realistic stories. And as a friend pointed out, there is a library in every one of them. It must be because libraries have always been magical places for me.

Maureen McQuerry is an award winning poet, novelist and teacher. Her YA novel, The Peculiars (Abrams/Amulet 2012) is an ALA Best Book for Young Adult Readers 2013, Bank Street and Horne Book recommended book, and a winner of the Westchester Award. Her most recent book is Beyond the Door (Abrams/Amulet), a Booklist top Ten Fantasy/SciFi for Youth. It is the first in a MG duo that combines, Celtic myth, shapeshifters and a secret code in a coming of age story. The adventure continues in The Telling Stone. Beyond the Door is a

Hi Dallys,
First, Lena and Jimson thank you for joining them on their adventures! I've learned so much since beginning my author journey, and I'm learning more with every book I read, every time I sit down and write. So a few words of inspiration that you've probably heard before: read widely, not just in genre's you love. Write every day, even if it's just a paragraph. the mind and body need this routine. Find your tribe, a group of people or a person who really gets your dream of writing and has the same dream too. Your tribe will give you honest feedback, encourage you when you get rejections (and you will get rejections) and they'll push you to give your best.

Craft is a huge subject so I'm going to refer you to a site I love http://goteenwriters.blogspot.com/. It doesn't matter how old you are, this site is full of examples and information on craft. Go there now! And don't give up on your dream!(less)

Life Disrupted: A Source for Creation

A month ago we moved. We left a community where we’d been deeply rooted for the last thirty years. We left wide skies and open fields of the high shrub steppe for a forested island near Seattle. The move brings us closer to family, to grandkids, to big city opportunities, but wrenches me from the kind of friends who’ve “known you since when” and from the small writing community that nurtured me th Read more of this blog post »

“Maybe being brave was not highly desireable in women. Normal women would have fled, like Pansy.”
Maureen Doyle McQuerry, The Peculiars

“It's not your family who defines you; they're an influence, all right, but they don't have the final say. We answer for that ourselves.”
Maureen Doyle McQuerry, The Peculiars

“I don't know who I am. But do you know who you are? Does anyone really? What makes a decent person? Does being the same as everyone else mean being better than people or does it just make it easier to look down your nose at them?”
Maureen Doyle McQuerry, The Peculiars

The Lost Challenges: Reading The Seasons - Spring 81 61 Jul 22, 2024 05:37AM
“Friendship arises out of mere Companionship when two or more of the companions discover that they have in common some insight or interest or even taste which the others do not share and which, till that moment, each believed to be his own unique treasure (or burden). The typical expression of opening Friendship would be something like, "What? You too? I thought I was the only one."
... It is when two such persons discover one another, when, whether with immense difficulties and semi-articulate fumblings or with what would seem to us amazing and elliptical speed, they share their vision - it is then that Friendship is born. And instantly they stand together in an immense solitude.”
C.S. Lewis, The Four Loves

“Matthew, much to his own surprise, was enjoying himself. Like most quiet folks he liked talkative people when they were willing to do the talking themselves and did not expect him to keep up his end of it.”
L. M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables

“Spirituality is not primarily about values and ethics, not about exhortations to do right or live well. The spiritual traditions are primarily about reality...an effort to penetrate the illusions of the external world and to name its underlying truth.”
Parker J. Palmer

“Papá coge la hoja de papel del suelo, la que dice «MMDD». Me pregunta qué quiere decir.
-Adivina -le respondo yo.
-¿Mi madre danza disco?
-Te doy otra oportunidad -contesto.
-Misma mierda, distinto día -dice él.
Me quedo boquiabierto. Él sonríe, me da el papel y se larga.”
Stephen Wallenfels, Pod

“Ahí lo tienen, señoras y señores. Yo veo a Bambi. Él ve filetes de ciervo friéndose en una sartén”
